When I first started sharing my photography, I naturally looked to my friends and family to help spread the word—to like, comment, and share my work. At times, it felt like an unspoken agreement: if they truly supported me, they’d engage with my art, show up to my events, or even hire me for projects. But as time went on, I noticed something—while they loved that I was creating, their engagement wasn’t always consistent. And that made me question everything. Recently, I had a conversation about this with my friend, Legendary Art. We’ve both been making art for as long as we can remember, and our styles—though different—are deeply influenced by the culture we grew up in. His work pulls from early hip-hop, anime, Black and Southern culture, and streetwear aesthetics, blending into a style that’s unmistakably his. We’v...

Behind the Lens: Turning Junkyard Chaos into Visual Art
Image generated using MidJourney and ChatGPT.
My recent photo and video shoot with Respect Mr. Walker and artist/singer-songwriter Ebonique was a creative adventure. The day began with Mr. Walker reaching out to collaborate on behind-the-scenes content for Ebonique's upcoming music rollout. The concept centered around cars and tires, tying into the theme of her song, which metaphorically explores driving on the other side of the road in foreign countries—a clever parallel to miscommunication in relationships. Our mission is to bring this theme to life visually.
Finding the perfect junkyard was an adventure in itself. We visited a few locations before finally landing at ABC Junkyard. Each spot had its own character, but ABC stood out with its unique blend of chaotic beauty—rusted metals, endless rows of tires, and a raw industrial atmosphere. Convincing the owner to let us use the space required some negotiation. We explained the artistic vision, highlighting how the junkyard's gritty aesthetic would complement the theme of Ebonique's song and bring attention to the beauty found in unconventional places. Thankfully, the owner saw the potential and granted us access, for which I'm incredibly grateful.
Collaborating with Mr. Walker and Ebonique was a seamless and inspiring process. Mr. Walker's sharp eye for creative direction and Ebonique's magnetic energy in front of the camera made the day productive and enjoyable. We discussed ideas extensively, ensuring every shot aligned with the story we wanted to tell. Ebonique's passion for her craft was contagious, and her willingness to experiment brought a fresh dynamic to the shoot.
For this project, I brought my trusty Sony a7iii paired with the Sony FE 3.5-5.5 28-70mm lens. This combination allowed me to capture wide environmental shots and intimate close-ups without missing a beat. Shooting primarily freehand allowed me to adapt quickly to the environment, maintaining steady motion while achieving a natural, observational feel. My goal was to make viewers feel like silent witnesses, peering into the world we were creating. Dpreview.com - Sony a7 III Review
One of my go-to techniques is incorporating still shots with moving elements. For instance, framing a static composition of scattered tires while a car's shadow moved across the frame. This approach minimizes motion blur, reduces post-editing time, and draws viewers' attention to explore the entire scene. By freezing key elements in time, the subtle movement encourages viewers to thoroughly scan and appreciate the composition. This method aligns with my visual storytelling style, which thrives on creating layered, contemplative imagery.
I experimented with angles and perspectives throughout the shoot to maximize the location's potential. Every frame was crafted to complement the song's narrative, from low shots through piles of tires to wide captures of the junkyard's sprawling chaos. A standout moment was filming Ebonique as she performed lines from her song amidst a sea of tires, with the late afternoon sun casting dramatic shadows that enhanced the mood.
Editing was a light-touch process, keeping the raw energy of the footage intact. Since the initial plan was to post content on Instagram Reels, I focused on quick, impactful cuts with vibrant color grading to make the visuals stand out on small screens. However, given the strength of the footage, I'm now considering a more extended version for YouTube to delve deeper into the behind-the-scenes journey and share the creative process with a broader audience.
Reflecting on this experience, I'm filled with gratitude. From the collaboration with Mr. Walker and Ebonique to the support of the junkyard owner, this project was a testament to the magic that happens when creative minds come together. For those looking to learn from this, I can't stress enough the importance of planning, adaptability, and collaboration. Whether finding the perfect location or experimenting with techniques, every step is an opportunity to tell a story that resonates. This shoot was a perfect blend of technical skill, creative exploration, and genuine connection—a reminder of my passion for this work.
Takeaways for New Creatives
Let me leave you with a few lessons and tips from this shoot that might inspire your own projects:
Collaborate boldly. Find people whose creative energy complements yours and be open to their ideas. Working with Mr. Walker and Ebonique reminded me that collaboration is where magic happens.
Scout for the perfect location. Don't settle for the first option. Explore places, imagine the possibilities, and don't be afraid to ask for access. Be respectful and share your vision—people are often willing to help when they see your passion.
Maximize your tools. My Sony a7iii and 28-70mm lenses were perfect for balancing versatility and quality. You don't need the fanciest gear; just know how to make the most of what you have.
Play with techniques. Experiment with angles, perspectives, and motion. Capturing still shots with subtle motion brought depth and intrigue to the visuals.
Keep editing simple. Don't overcomplicate the process. Focus on retaining the essence of your footage, mainly if it's meant for quick, engaging platforms like Instagram.
Be adaptable. Whether negotiating with a location owner or adjusting your plans on the fly, flexibility can turn challenges into creative opportunities.
Show gratitude. Reflect on the experience, thank those involved, and appreciate the lessons learned. Every project is a stepping stone to growth.
"To all the creatives out there, let this be a reminder to embrace every moment of your journey—whether in a polished studio or an unconventional junkyard, your story is yours to craft."
